At least five people were injured following a violent clash between activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the student wing Chhatra Dal in Shariatpur, triggering panic across the area after the sound of cocktail explosions rang out on Monday evening.
According to eyewitnesses and police sources, the incident occurred in the busy Chaurangi area of Shariatpur town, where NCP leaders and supporters were holding a protest march. The demonstration had been organised to demand justice for the killing of Inqilab Mancha convener Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi, who was reportedly shot dead, as well as to protest against the shooting of Motaleb Shikdar, a central organiser of the Labour Force in Khulna.
As the procession moved through Chaurangi, tensions escalated when a motorcycle ridden by a Chhatra Dal activist entered the marching crowd. What initially began as a verbal altercation quickly descended into physical confrontation. Within moments, clashes erupted between members of the two groups. During the unrest, one or more cocktails were detonated, sending shockwaves through the locality and causing widespread fear among residents and shopkeepers.
At least five individuals sustained injuries in the ensuing violence. Some were treated at nearby medical facilities, while others received first aid at the scene. Both parties have since levelled accusations against each other, each blaming the other side for provoking the clash.
District Chhatra Dal member secretary Sohel Talukder alleged that one of their activists was unlawfully stopped while travelling along the road. “When we arrived after receiving the news, NCP activists launched a sudden and unprovoked attack on us,” he said, calling for a fair and impartial investigation into the incident.
However, presenting a counter-narrative, former joint coordinator of the district NCP, Sabuj Talukder, stated that their march was entirely peaceful. “A Chhatra Dal activist rode his motorcycle straight into our procession and assaulted one of our members. When we restrained him, Sohel Talukder and his associates arrived and attacked us with locally made weapons,” he claimed, also demanding justice.
Commenting on the situation, Palang Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Shah Alam confirmed that the clash stemmed from the motorcycle entering the NCP procession. “Upon receiving information, police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control,” he said, adding that legal action would be taken following formal complaints.
Law enforcement authorities have since increased patrols in the area to prevent further unrest. Although the situation is currently under control, the incident has reignited concerns over political intolerance and street violence in the region.
