In a shocking incident in Kanchpur, Sonargaon Upazila, five individuals were seriously injured after being attacked with sharp weapons following suspicions of mobile phone theft. Local residents apprehended a suspect and handed him over to the police.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred around midnight on Wednesday, 18 February, at the Partex playground in the Raiyartek area of Kanchpur Union. The conflict arose after a mobile phone belonging to Nirob Mia reportedly went missing from the playground, with suspicion falling on a young man identified as Amin Mia.
Subsequently, Nirob Mia and four acquaintances approached Amin Mia to retrieve the allegedly stolen phone. Eyewitnesses reported that Amin initially agreed to return the device but instead led the group back to the playground, where a verbal altercation escalated into a violent attack. Amin allegedly wielded a sharp weapon, injuring all five individuals. The victims—Nirob Mia, Md. Sujon, Kawsar Mia, Sohan, and Chonchol—sustained serious injuries.
Locals rushed to the scene after hearing screams, rescuing the victims and restraining the assailant before handing him over to police authorities. The injured were immediately transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for urgent treatment, where doctors reported that two of the five remain in critical condition.
Following the attack, Nirob Mia’s aunt, Shiuli, filed a written complaint with the Sonargaon Police Station. The Officer-in-Charge, Mohibbullah, confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody. “A formal case has been registered, and after initial processing, the accused will be presented in court for further legal proceedings,” he stated.
