Five Jamaat candidates in Comilla own assets worth over ten million taka

In the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary elections, five candidates from Jamaat-e-Islami in Comilla have declared assets exceeding one crore taka. Their combined immovable and movable assets underscore the significant financial standing of these candidates.

Leading in declared wealth is Syed A.K.M. Sarwar Uddin Siddiqui, contesting from Comilla-9. He serves as the Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami in South Comilla. Siddiqui has reported total assets amounting to 2.94 crore taka. However, his liabilities are also substantial, with bank loans totalling 2.60 crore taka under his name.

At the other end of the spectrum, the candidates with the least assets are Md. Moniruzzaman (Comilla-1) and Md. Mosharaf Hossain (Comilla-7), each declaring combined assets of 42.7 lakh taka. Despite his relatively modest total wealth, Moniruzzaman leads in annual income, reporting 25.72 lakh taka per year. By contrast, Kazi Din Mohammad, candidate for Comilla-6, has the lowest annual income among Jamaat nominees at 5.28 lakh taka.

Out of Comilla’s 11 parliamentary constituencies, Jamaat candidates filed nomination papers in 10. The nomination of Md. Yusuf Sohel from Comilla-3 (Muradnagar) was annulled on 3 January due to incomplete disclosure in his affidavit. All remaining nine candidates from other constituencies have submitted detailed affidavits outlining their income, assets, liabilities, and professional information, providing transparency for voters.

An analysis of the affidavits reveals that six candidates list their profession as business, including Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher of Comilla-11, who specifies “business (medical services)”. Three candidates identify as teachers: Mobarak Hossain (Comilla-5), Mosharaf Hossain (Comilla-7), and Shafiqul Alam Helal (Comilla-8).

Educational qualifications among the Jamaat candidates are notable. Two hold PhDs (Mobarak Hossain and Sarwar Uddin Siddiqui), four have master’s degrees, one is a graduate, and one holds an MBBS degree (Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher). Mosharaf Hossain, despite being a teacher, did not specify his educational qualification.

The process is designed to ensure that voters have full knowledge of the candidates before casting their votes.

Meanwhile, in Comilla-4 (Debidwar), Saiful Islam (Shaheed), initially nominated by Jamaat, withdrew due to the party’s alliance with the National Citizens Party (NCP). The coalition candidate for this seat is now Hasnat Abdullah from the NCP.

This detailed disclosure highlights both the financial strength and professional backgrounds of Jamaat candidates, offering voters a clear picture of their potential parliamentary representatives in Comilla.
