Five police officers slashed in robbery, seven arrested

In a shocking incident in Mymensingh city, police officers were violently attacked while attempting to escort a suspect to the local police station. The assailants not only injured five police personnel but also forcibly freed the suspect, Ariful Islam, who was in handcuffs at the time. Following a night-long operation, police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel succeeded in arresting seven individuals, including the suspect’s father. The incident has caused widespread fear in the local community, with many men reportedly leaving the area.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon (13 January) near the Digarkanda Fishery Mor area. A team of five police officers, led by Investigation Officer SI Farid Ahmed, was conducting an operation to apprehend Ariful Islam, son of local resident Sagar Ali, in connection with a recent violent assault case.

According to SI Farid Ahmed and local residents, the case stemmed from an earlier attack in which a man named Russel was seriously injured after being beaten by Ariful Islam and others. Russel is currently receiving critical care at Pangu Hospital in Dhaka.

During the arrest operation, Ariful’s father, Sagar Ali, along with a group of locals armed with sticks and crude weapons, launched a sudden attack on the police team. The attackers brutally assaulted the officers, causing serious injuries to five personnel, and forcibly freed Ariful Islam from custody. The injured officers were immediately rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. While SI Farid Ahmed was admitted to Ward 6 for treatment, the remaining officers received primary care.

Police and RAB units, supported by the army, quickly secured the area and restored order. A night-long operation led to the arrest of seven individuals, including Ariful Islam’s father, who were allegedly involved in the assault and the subsequent escape of the suspect.

OC of Kotwali Model Police Station, Md. Nazmus Sakib, confirmed that investigations are ongoing to apprehend all involved in the attack and the forcible release of the suspect. The authorities have assured that stringent action will be taken against all perpetrators to prevent further violence in the area.
