Former Badda Thana Chhatra League Leader Dies

Wasikur Rahman Babu, former president of the Badda Thana unit of the Chhatra League, has died while in prison custody, authorities have confirmed. His death occurred on Sunday, 21 December, according to Assistant Inspector General of Prisons Jannat Ul Farhad.

The official stated that Babu was arrested in September and transferred on 27 September to Kashimpur Prison-2. “Following the approval of his remand in an ongoing case, a police team arrived on Sunday afternoon to take him into custody for questioning,” the official explained.

Babu reportedly lost consciousness at the prison gate around 4:15 p.m. during the handover to police. He was immediately transported to Tajuddin Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Wasikur Rahman Babu also held the position of Youth and Sports Secretary of the Badda Thana Awami League at the time of his death. His political career had included leadership in the Chhatra League, the student wing of the party, reflecting his longstanding involvement in local politics.

According to a former Chhatra League leader who requested anonymity, Babu had been arrested earlier on 24 September in Dhaka’s Panthapath area during what was described as a “flash rally.” Following the arrest, he was reportedly beaten by a group of civilians before being handed over to the Kalabagan Police Station.

The source added that Babu sustained serious injuries at that time and may not have received adequate medical attention while in custody, which raises questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Authorities have yet to provide detailed information regarding the exact cause of death, and investigations are expected to examine whether proper procedures were followed during the transfer and custody process.
