Shah Nurul Kabir Shahin, former Member of Parliament for the Mymensingh-8 (Ishwarganj) constituency, has formally announced his resignation from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), citing prolonged deprivation from party nomination as the principal reason behind his decision. The announcement marks the end of more than four decades of his association with the party.
The resignation was made public on Sunday, 28 December, at exactly noon during a press conference held at the Ishwarganj Press Club. Addressing journalists and local political leaders, Shahin declared that he was stepping away from all party posts and activities with immediate effect. He also confirmed that his written resignation had been sent by post to the party’s Acting Chairman.
Reflecting on his long political journey, Shahin stated that his involvement in BNP politics began during his student years at the University of Dhaka, where he was elected as a representative of Fazlul Huq Hall. From that point onward, he remained actively engaged in party politics for 43 consecutive years. He recalled that during the politically turbulent period of “One-Eleven”, he had appeared on television talk shows and spoken to various media outlets in defence of the party—a role he described as both risky and demanding.
Shahin further noted that during successive Awami League governments, he had taken part in street protests, rallies, and political movements, which resulted in imprisonment and various forms of political repression. Despite these hardships, he maintained unwavering loyalty to the BNP.
In 2001, Shahin was elected to Parliament after receiving the party’s nomination. Although he was again nominated in 2006, the election was ultimately not held. In 2014, the BNP boycotted the national election, preventing his participation. Later, in the 2018 general election, he initially received party nomination but was eventually sidelined due to alliance-based political arrangements.
Despite repeated setbacks, Shahin asserted that he continued to organise party activists and lead BNP activities during its most challenging periods. He expressed disappointment that, despite numerous nomination reshuffles ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election, the party leadership did not reconsider his case.
Responding to questions from reporters, Shahin revealed that several political parties had approached him with offers of nomination. However, he has yet to reach a final decision. He added that if public support in the constituency remains strong, he would consider contesting the election as an independent candidate.
