Former Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who was ousted earlier this month amid the Gen-Z movement, has publicly declared that he has no intention of fleeing the country. Despite transferring power to the current interim government, Oli emphasised that he will remain in Nepal.
On Saturday, 27 September, Oli attended an event organised by the youth wing of his political party, Gundu, and addressed his supporters:
“Do you think we will hand over power to this baseless government and flee the country? That will never happen.”
He further stated: “We ourselves will rebuild this nation. We will restore Nepal to the mainstream of the Constitution and lead the country towards peace and good governance.”
Approximately eighteen days ago, Oli was rescued with the assistance of the military during the intense Gen-Z protests that shook the country. Since then, he had remained out of public view, until his return on Saturday.
Oli criticised the interim government, asserting that it did not come to power through a popular mandate, but rather through violence and vandalism.
He also challenged the interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, claiming he was not involved in any conspiracy: “The recordings of the instructions I gave to the administration during the movement should be released.”
Oli alleged that the interim government is planning to confiscate the passports of not only himself but also several former cabinet members. He warned that such measures would violate his citizens’ rights.
