Even though the Asia Cup final concluded with an exhilarating contest, the tournament’s aftermath remains embroiled in controversy. Among the lingering tensions, the India-Pakistan rivalry appears to have taken a new turn. Former Pakistan cricketers have expressed their disapproval of India’s behaviour after the final, with Rashid Latif, a former national player, going as far as to call for India to be suspended from cricket.
Prior to the final, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had already announced that, despite the presence of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and federal minister Mohsin Naqvi would not hand over the trophy to Team India. True to this announcement, India did not receive the trophy during the award ceremony, with Suryakumar Yadav and his teammates celebrating their victory without it.
Rashid Latif expressed his dissatisfaction on social media: “The Indian cricket team should be suspended for refusing to accept the Asia Cup trophy. In any other sport, such an action would have consequences. But with most ICC officials being Indian, that will not happen. It is an ugly day for cricket. The spirit of the game has been tarnished in broad daylight.”
On the other hand, Shoaib Malik offered a degree of understanding for India’s position: “The Indian players were under immense pressure to win the trophy. And then, they did not even get it in their hands. Today, they may seem to be celebrating or reacting strongly, but in a few years, they will reflect on this decision. They will feel disappointed and think, ‘We worked so hard to win, yet we did not get the trophy.’”
