Former South Korean Prime Minister and Intelligence Chief Arrested

Former South Korean Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn and former National Intelligence Service (NIS) chief Cho Tae-yong have been arrested in connection with the declaration of martial law in December 2024.

According to the state news agency Yonhap, on Wednesday (November 12), Hwang Kyo-ahn was arrested for “inciting rebellion,” while Cho Tae-yong was detained on charges of “violating the intelligence law and neglecting his duties.”

After the martial law was declared, former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn called for the arrest of the National Assembly Speaker through a Facebook post and demanded the “elimination of electoral fraudsters.”

Meanwhile, former intelligence chief Cho Tae-yong has been accused of knowing about the plan to declare martial law but failing to report it to the National Assembly.

The main accused in the military coup case, former President Yoon Suk-yeol, is currently in prison awaiting trial. He has been newly accused of secretly sending drones to North Korea to provoke conflict and thereby justify his military regime.

During his tenure, Yoon attempted to send troops to seize control of parliament but failed. This made him the first sitting president in South Korean history to be arrested while in office. His wife, Kim Keon-hee, is also imprisoned on corruption charges.
