Former Student Coordinator Dismissed Over Allegations of Making Inappropriate Proposals to Female Students

Rahmat Ali, the former coordinator of the Rangpur Metropolitan Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has been dismissed from his contractual position as ‘Course Instructor’ under the KICK Scholarship Programme at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR).

The decision was taken by the German-based organisation overseeing the scholarship programme, following allegations that he made inappropriate proposals to female students under the pretext of offering scholarships.

The organisation made the decision during an emergency meeting held on Thursday (21 August). The matter was confirmed on Friday night (22 August) by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Shawkat Ali. He stated, “An allegation involving a female student was brought against Rahmat. As a result, the organisation dismissed him from his role as Course Instructor. Since his recruitment and salary were entirely managed by the organisation, they will now appoint a new instructor.”

Earlier, multiple screenshots from social media platform Facebook, allegedly involving Rahmat Ali, were leaked. In these, he was seen telling a female student: “I feel a strong attraction towards you, I need you. Normally, I vow not to touch even my partner, I don’t know how you’ll take this, but I truly desire you. Will you be with me?”

In addition to the misconduct allegations, Rahmat Ali had also been accused of neglecting his teaching duties. Several students claimed he was more active in politics than in taking regular classes. One of his course students, Md. Russel, said, “He (Rahmat Ali) didn’t attend classes regularly. He would come only when he felt like it.”

Multiple attempts were made to contact Rahmat Ali for his comments on the matter, but he did not respond to phone calls. However, in a Facebook post, he claimed the allegations were part of a conspiracy and that the leaked screenshots had been edited.
