Four Decades of Music: Kamal’s Reflective Journey

Published: 16 Jan 2026, 06:04 pm

Ibrahim Ahmed Kamal, the veteran guitarist of the iconic Bangladeshi rock band Warfaze, has offered a poignant reflection on his musical career spanning over four decades, describing it as the “greatest achievement” of his life. In a heartfelt Facebook post on Wednesday, Kamal revisited the milestones of his journey, from learning the guitar in the early 1980s to becoming a foundational figure in one of Bangladesh’s most influential rock ensembles.

Kamal recounted that the years between 1984 and 2026 feel “like a dream.” His musical path began in earnest when he purchased his first guitar in November 1983 and started formal lessons the following year. By 1986, he performed his first live show and earned his first income from music.

By 1987, Kamal was actively performing with various bands, recording in studios, appearing on Bangladesh Television, and collaborating with other artists. He considers 1988 a turning point, marking the beginning of Warfaze’s successful ascent. The band’s self-titled debut album, released in 1991, remains a landmark both in his personal career and in the broader landscape of Bangladeshi rock music.

Kamal has credited his parents for allowing him the freedom to fully commit to music, enabling him to avoid a conventional career path. Despite juggling studies, family responsibilities, business ventures, travel, and music, he believes the life he chose—with friends, bandmates, and music at its centre—has defined both his personal happiness and artistic achievements.

The guitarist also spoke candidly about personal challenges. Following his father’s death in 2024, he endured a period of severe depression. While he has since returned to music, physical limitations prevent him from performing at his former pace. Today, he approaches his craft more thoughtfully, valuing depth over speed.

Reflecting on his lifestyle, Kamal considers the freedom from conventional employment as his greatest “insurance,” allowing decades of travel, creation, and enduring friendships. He believes the enduring legacy of these relationships is reflected in the music Warfaze has produced.

Looking ahead, Kamal expressed hopes to resume international tours once visa-related challenges are resolved. “Let’s see how far we can go with Warfaze in the next few years,” he remarked.

A summary of key milestones in Kamal’s career is presented below:
