Border security forces in Chapainawabganj intercepted three Bangladeshi youths attempting to cross illegally into India on Wednesday evening, January 14. The operation, conducted by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), took place at Bakchar border in the district’s Sadar Upazila around 7:00 PM.
During the operation, a member of a human trafficking network, who was assisting the youths in reaching India, was also arrested. The details were confirmed in a press release by Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Mustafizur Rahman, commanding officer of the 53rd BGB Battalion in Chapainawabganj.
| Name | Village/Area | Upazila/District | Intended Destination | Intended Work in India |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mizanur Rahman | Chandpur Lohlomari | Shibganj, Chapainawabganj | Chennai, India | Mason work |
| Shafiqul Islam Munna | Assam Colony | Rajshahi Metropolitan, Rajshahi | Chennai, India | Mason work |
| Tarajul Islam | Durgapur | Mithapukur, Rangpur | Chennai, India | Mason work |
According to Lieutenant Colonel Rahman, the BGB operation was conducted based on a confidential tip-off. The team moved approximately 200 yards inside Bangladeshi territory along the zero line of Bakchar border and successfully detained Shahin along with the three youths.
During questioning, the arrested individuals admitted that they were planning to travel to Chennai, India, with Shahin’s assistance. They stated that they intended to work as masons upon arrival, a common ruse employed by human trafficking networks targeting young men from rural areas.
All four detainees were subsequently handed over to the Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station for further legal proceedings. The BGB emphasised that such operations are part of ongoing efforts to prevent human trafficking along Bangladesh’s borders, a crime that endangers both national security and the personal safety of vulnerable individuals.
Human trafficking remains a persistent concern in border districts like Chapainawabganj, where traffickers exploit economic hardships and the lure of overseas work. Authorities have urged local communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
This latest arrest highlights the continued vigilance of border forces and the proactive measures being taken to dismantle trafficking networks before they can operate across international boundaries.
