Four Held in Extortion Case

Four individuals arrested in connection with an alleged extortion attempt at a specialist kidney care hospital in Dhaka have been remanded in custody for four days by a metropolitan magistrate’s court.

The order was issued on Monday afternoon after police produced the accused before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court, seeking custodial interrogation in connection with the case filed over threats and demands for money at a private medical facility in the city’s Shyamoli area.

According to court proceedings, the case stems from allegations that a group of individuals entered the CKD Urology Hospital—founded by kidney specialist Dr Kamrul Islam—and demanded five lakh Bangladeshi taka in extortion, allegedly identifying themselves as representatives of a youth political organisation.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that a total of seven suspects were arrested in connection with the incident. Among them, one identified as Moin Uddin is believed to be the principal accused, while the remaining six are described as his associates. Authorities stated that detailed identities of all detainees would be disclosed after further verification.

The case was filed at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station by Abu Hanif, who serves as the operating theatre in-charge at the hospital. Following media coverage of the incident, senior leaders of a youth wing affiliated with a major political party visited the hospital on Friday night. They reportedly expressed concern over the allegations and assured strict organisational action against anyone found involved in criminal activity.

Earlier, the Rapid Action Battalion’s Legal and Media Wing Director, M Z M Intekhab Chowdhury, confirmed the arrests and stated that investigations were ongoing to determine the full extent of the network involved in the alleged extortion attempt.

Authorities are now examining whether the accused acted independently or as part of a coordinated group. Police have indicated that further arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation progresses.
