Four Jailed for Youth Kidnapping and Murder

In a significant legal verdict, a Narayanganj court has sentenced four individuals to life imprisonment for the abduction and murder of 23-year-old Bhajan Chandra Das. In addition to the life term, each convict was fined 50,000 taka, with an additional two years’ rigorous imprisonment in case of non-payment.

The sentence was delivered on Tuesday, 20 January, by Senior District and Sessions Judge Abu Shamiim Azad at the Narayanganj court. Court Police Inspector Md. Abdus Samad (PPM) confirmed the ruling to the press. At the time of the verdict, all four accused were absent and remain fugitives.

The convicts have been identified as:

Name Parentage Area Crime Sentence Fine Additional Punishment (Non-payment)
Sojal Barman Son of Narayan Barman Duptara, Araihazar Abduction & murder Life imprisonment 50,000 taka 2 years’ rigorous imprisonment
Sanjit Barman Son of Pagol Chan Barman Duptara, Araihazar Abduction & murder Life imprisonment 50,000 taka 2 years’ rigorous imprisonment

Ruma Daughter of Qader Nandlalpur, Fatulla Abduction & murder Life imprisonment 50,000 taka 2 years’ rigorous imprisonment

According to court records, the incident took place on 13 April 2017, when Bhajan Chandra Das, son of Foni Chandra Das from Madhabdi, Narsingdi, was forcibly abducted. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of 20,000 taka from the victim’s family. Despite the payment, on 16 April 2017, the accused premeditatedly murdered Bhajan and attempted to conceal the body by burying it underground.

Following the crime, the victim’s father filed a formal complaint with Araihazar Police Station, prompting a detailed investigation. Law enforcement agencies, through persistent inquiries and evidence collection, were eventually able to identify the perpetrators, leading to the prosecution and ultimate conviction.

Legal analysts have described the ruling as a strong precedent in the fight against violent crime, particularly kidnapping and murder. The verdict is being widely regarded as a demonstration of judicial firmness in Narayanganj, sending a clear message that abduction and homicide will be met with severe consequences.

The case has also highlighted the emotional and social impact of such violent crimes on families and local communities. Bhajan Chandra Das’s family had suffered long-standing trauma and anxiety over his disappearance and murder. The court’s ruling, therefore, is seen not only as a legal resolution but also as a measure of societal reassurance.

The judgment reinforces the importance of prompt investigation, evidence-based prosecution, and judicial vigilance in tackling serious criminal acts, serving as both justice for the victim and a deterrent to potential offenders.
