Four Killed in Monsoon Floods Across Central Thailand

Thailand, Central Region: Four people have tragically lost their lives due to flooding in central Thailand, the country’s disaster agency reported on Tuesday, amid forecasts of continued heavy rainfall during the annual monsoon season.

According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), over 250,000 people across several provinces in the Chao Phraya river basin have been affected by the floods this week.

Details of the Fatalities:

Province Victim Details Cause of Death
Ayutthaya Two men Drowned while moving belongings through floodwaters
Phetchabun One man Rowboat capsized in floodwaters
Phichit 17-year-old girl Drowned while riding motorbike through flooded area

The Thai Meteorological Department has forecasted continued heavy rainfall in the north, central, and eastern provinces, including Bangkok, until Friday, with the potential for flash floods.

Thailand experiences heavy rainfall annually between June and September, but experts have warned that climate change has intensified extreme weather events, rendering conditions increasingly unpredictable.

Last month, northern Thailand witnessed fatalities due to Typhoon Kajiki, which caused landslides and flooding, resulting in five deaths and 15 injuries. The same typhoon also impacted Vietnam, destroying thousands of homes, killing several, and forcing tens of thousands to evacuate.

Historically, widespread flooding in Thailand in 2011 claimed more than 500 lives and caused extensive damage to millions of homes nationwide, highlighting the recurring risk posed by the monsoon season.

This week’s floods serve as a stark reminder of the continuing vulnerability of communities across the Chao Phraya basin to seasonal deluges and climate-related hazards.
