A court in Kushtia has sentenced four men to life imprisonment in connection with the brutal killing of Sahabul Islam Mondal in Mirpur upazila, bringing a long-running murder trial to a close nearly five years after the incident.
The verdict was delivered on Sunday (29 March) at the Kushtia District and Sessions Judge Court by Judge Md Enayet Kabir Sarkar. The convicted individuals are Asadul Pramanik, also known as Kalu, Abu Taher, Habil Hossain, and Md Milon.
According to case records, the incident took place on 21 October 2019 in Naoda Azampur village. The prosecution stated that the murder stemmed from a local factional dispute. In an alleged attempt to implicate rivals, the accused reportedly conspired together and abducted Sahabul Islam Mondal. He was taken to a mustard field behind Burapara Government Primary School in the Matpahar area of Naoda Azampur, where he was strangled to death.
Following the incident, the victim’s wife filed a case at Mirpur Police Station against unidentified individuals. During the initial investigation, Mirpur Police Station investigation officer Sub-Inspector (Investigation) SM Jabid Hasan arrested Asadul Pramanik, alias Kalu, based on suspicion outlined in the complaint. During interrogation, Kalu reportedly confessed to his involvement in the killing and named his alleged accomplices.
Subsequently, all four accused were identified, and after completion of the investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against them. The case proceeded through lengthy judicial hearings, during which 17 witnesses testified before the court.
After reviewing the evidence and hearing final arguments, the court found all four accused guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The verdict was announced in the presence of three of the convicted men; Abu Taher was absent during the judgment session.
The case was prosecuted on behalf of the state by Public Prosecutor Khandaker Sirajul Islam, who presented arguments supporting the charges and evidence submitted during the investigation.
