Tragedy struck the mountainous region of Phocis in central Greece on Christmas Day, as an avalanche claimed the lives of four tourists on Mount Vardousia. The group had embarked on a hiking excursion, seeking to scale the Korakas peak when the fatal incident occurred.
After an extensive search and rescue operation lasting several hours, the authorities recovered the bodies on Friday. Greek state media reported that the missing hikers had failed to return within the scheduled timeframe, prompting concerned family members to alert local authorities.
A joint rescue operation was swiftly launched involving the fire service, specialised mountain rescue teams, and volunteers. The mission was hampered by severe weather conditions, including heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and treacherous terrain. Rescue teams eventually located the victims with the aid of drones, thermal imaging devices, and trained search dogs.
The deceased included three men and one woman. Their proximity at the site suggests they were caught together by the sudden and powerful avalanche, leaving them no opportunity to seek shelter or escape.
Among the victims was a 55-year-old experienced mountaineer from Lichaina in Peloponnese, renowned for his extensive climbing across Greece’s mountains. Another victim worked as a computer technician, while the woman, aged 31, was a schoolteacher from Trikala.
Experts have warned that in mountainous regions like Vardousia, even minor ground vibrations can trigger large avalanches, especially under heavy snow accumulation.
Following the incident, Greek authorities issued urgent safety advisories, urging hikers to avoid mountain trails without experienced guides. They also emphasised the importance of following weather forecasts, carrying adequate winter climbing gear, and taking all necessary precautions during the peak winter hiking season.
Details of the Victims:
