French Photojournalist Killed by Drone in Eastern Ukraine

A French photojournalist was killed and a Ukrainian reporter wounded on Friday in eastern Ukraine during a drone attack, officials and media groups confirmed.

Antoni Lallican, 37, was embedded with Ukraine’s Fourth Armoured Brigade near the front line in the Donbas region when the incident occurred. Ukrainian authorities reported that the attack was carried out by a drone.

Ukrainian journalist Georgiy Ivanchenko was injured in the same assault, which both Ukraine’s military and French President Emmanuel Macron attributed to Russia.

The Fourth Armoured Brigade confirmed that both journalists wore personal protective equipment and bulletproof vests clearly marked ‘PRESS’.

Lallican was the first journalist killed by a drone in the ongoing Ukraine war, according to the European and International Federations of Journalists.

  • At least 17 journalists have now died since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022; UNESCO reports the number as 22.
  • Previous victims include AFP video journalist Arman Soldin, killed by rocket fire in 2023.

Macron expressed his “deep sadness” over Lallican’s death, highlighting the tension between Russia and Ukraine’s European allies.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) called for a swift investigation, stating that Lallican “died while doing his job, bearing witness to the consequences of war.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga condemned the attack, stating that Russia “continues to deliberately target journalists,” calling it “a heinous crime and violation of international humanitarian law.”

Career and Achievements of Antoni Lallican

  • Based in Paris, Lallican contributed to Le Monde (France) and Der Spiegel (Germany).
  • Regularly worked with Mediapart and the Hans Lucas photography agency, frequently reporting from Ukraine.
  • Covered international conflicts in Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and the Palestinian territories.
  • Lallican originally studied to be a pharmacist but switched careers at age 30 after witnessing conflict in Kashmir, which inspired his passion for photojournalism.
  • At home, he documented social issues such as impoverished housing in Paris.
  • In 2024, he received the Victor Hugo prize for “committed photography”.

Colleagues’ Tributes

  • Mediapart described him as a “formidable photographer and excellent colleague.”
  • Hans Lucas noted his dedication: “He documented the siege of Kyiv and has not ceased bearing witness to the reality of war and its consequences for civilians.”

Lallican had emphasised in a 2022 festival that war photography is a high-risk profession, requiring constant alertness and thorough preparation.

Reaction from International Press Groups

  • The European and International Federations of Journalists labelled the attack a war crime.
  • RSF and other press watchdogs called for accountability and protective measures for journalists covering conflict zones.

Lallican’s death underscores the extreme risks faced by journalists in modern warfare, particularly in conflict zones like eastern Ukraine where drone warfare is increasingly prevalent.
