A French resident has stumbled upon an extraordinary discovery — a cache of gold valued at approximately $800,000 — while digging a swimming pool in his garden, according to local officials.
The remarkable find occurred in May this year in the eastern French town of Neuville-sur-Saône. Upon unearthing the treasure, the man promptly informed the local authorities. Following an investigation, the council confirmed that the gold did not originate from any archaeological site, thereby granting the lucky homeowner legal ownership of his find.
According to Le Progrès, a regional newspaper, the man discovered “five gold bars and numerous coins” carefully sealed in plastic bags beneath the soil. Police later determined that the gold had been lawfully obtained and was most likely refined at a nearby facility roughly 15 to 20 years ago.
Officials from the town hall further disclosed that the garden’s previous owner has since passed away, leaving unanswered questions about how the gold came to be buried there in the first place. Despite efforts to trace its origins, the source of the treasure remains shrouded in mystery — adding a touch of intrigue to what is already one of the most unusual discoveries in recent memory.
The find has sparked fascination and envy across France, with many joking that they might be tempted to start digging in their own back gardens in the hope of uncovering a similar fortune.
