Frequent Shifts in Political Stances Have Become Common: Zillur Rahman

Political analyst and presenter Zillur Rahman has said that discussions are still ongoing regarding the July Charter. Questions remain about how it will be implemented—whether the referendum will be held before or after. Political parties are frequently changing their positions. The NCP is now saying that the referendum could be held on the same day as the national election, similar to what the BNP has suggested.

He made these remarks recently in a video on his YouTube channel.

Rahman stated that, in response to NCP’s demand for the ‘Shapla’ (water lily) symbol, the Election Commission has decided to include the ‘Shapla Koli’ symbol in its list of election symbols. He questioned whether the Election Commission could take such a decision based on a single party’s demand, saying it undermines the Commission’s neutrality. However, the NCP remains dissatisfied, insisting that they want the ‘Shapla’ symbol specifically.

Zillur Rahman further said that the election people want should be free, fair, acceptable, participatory, and peaceful. But under the current circumstances, such an election is not happening, which raises concerns. If such an election could be held, it would ensure people’s empowerment and decision-making rights.

He also stated that the people will reject whoever they choose to reject.

According to him, if the election were truly free and fair, much of the fear and anxiety surrounding it would fade away. The people of Bangladesh are not irrational; whenever they have been given the opportunity, they have made the right decisions and taken to the streets when necessary.
