Fugitive Arrested in Rangpur Double Murder Case

Rangpur, 13 March 2026: The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-13) has apprehended a fugitive linked to the widely publicised double murder case in Taraganj, Rangpur. The arrest took place late on Friday night in Fakirpara village, Taraganj Upazila, following an intelligence-led operation.

The detained individual, Majidul Islam (24), is the son of Altaf Hossain of Fakirpara village. He had been evading law enforcement since the incident, which shocked the local community and drew nationwide attention.

According to RAB sources, law enforcement agencies regularly conduct operations across the country to curb sensational crimes, including murder, abduction, rape, and extortion. As part of these ongoing efforts, intelligence units intensified surveillance on the double murder case in Taraganj. Acting on specific leads and confidential information, a RAB team raided Majidul Islam’s residence on Friday night, leading to his arrest.

Rangpur RAB Senior Assistant Director and Additional Superintendent of Police, Biplob Kumar Goswami, stated,
“The fugitive suspects in this high-profile double murder case had been under our surveillance. This arrest is part of our continued effort to bring violent criminals to justice. Operations like these will persist to prevent such crimes in the future.”

Background of the Case

The double murder occurred on the night of 9 August 2025, leaving the local population horrified. The victims were:

On the night in question, the victims were returning home by van when they were stopped by local residents at Buriarhat Bottola Mor, 5 No. Sayar Union, who reportedly became suspicious. A bag carried by the victims emitted a foul odour, causing some onlookers to feel unwell. This led to the crowd violently accusing the victims of theft or other crimes, eventually assaulting them with sticks, rods, and other weapons in the Buriarhat High School field.

Ruplal Ravidash was declared dead at Taraganj Upazila Health Complex, while Pradip Lal was transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Following the tragedy, Ruplal Ravidash’s wife filed a case under Sections 302/34 of the Penal Code on 10 August 2025, naming several individuals, including unknown assailants. The brutality of the crime stirred significant media coverage and public outrage, prompting RAB and other law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.

The recent arrest marks a crucial step in the investigation, with authorities continuing their pursuit of other suspects.
