Chattogram police have apprehended the alleged leader of a notorious local robbery gang, Shahab Uddin Shabu, along with one of his associates, as part of an ongoing crackdown on organised crime in the city. Shabu, 34, who is reported to be the younger brother of prominent criminal Shahidul Islam Buisha, was arrested in the early hours of Friday, 6 March, from the Arakan Society entrance gate area under Panchlaish Police Station jurisdiction.
The operation was conducted by the Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s North Detective Branch (DB), highlighting a coordinated effort to dismantle the gang’s network. Shabu’s associate, Mohammad Parvez, 37, was also taken into custody during the raid.
According to DB officials, Shahab Uddin Shabu has been identified as the mastermind behind a series of robberies and criminal activities across Chattogram city. He faces six cases under various charges, including firearm offences, drug possession, attempted murder, theft, and armed robbery, all filed under the Speedy Trial Act. Parvez, his accomplice, is currently implicated in one of these cases.
Shahidul Islam Buisha, Shabu’s elder brother and a high-profile figure in Chattogram’s criminal underworld, is already serving time in prison, facing 27 separate criminal cases. The police have indicated that investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to apprehend other members of the gang.
Speaking to the press, Mohammad Habibur Rahman, Deputy Police Commissioner (DB North) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, said, “Shahab Uddin Shabu, brother of the criminal Shahidul Islam Buisha, has been arrested along with an associate. He is the principal leader of a gang involved in multiple criminal activities. Shabu faces six charges, while his accomplice faces one. Our operation continues to locate and arrest the remaining members of this gang.”
The recent arrests have been widely welcomed by residents, who have long been affected by street robberies and gang violence in the city. Law enforcement authorities emphasise that the ongoing crackdown aims to restore public safety and curb organised criminal networks in Chattogram.
