Gazi Mazharul Anwar remains one of the most luminous figures in the realms of Bangla music and cinema. Born on 22 February 1943 in Taleshwar village of Daudkandi, Comilla, he continues to live on through his immortal creations that have shaped the cultural landscape of Bangladesh.

A multi-talented cultural icon, Anwar excelled as a lyricist, composer, filmmaker, producer, storyteller, and dialogue writer. His professional journey began in 1964 with song-writing for Radio Pakistan, and he soon became a regular contributor to Bangladesh Television from its inception, composing songs and scripts for countless programmes. In 1967, he made his cinematic debut as a lyricist with the film Ayna O Oboshishto, quickly establishing himself as one of the nation’s most beloved songwriters.

Patriotism and love for his country were the central themes of his creations. The spirit of the Liberation War, deep affection for Bangladesh, and the hopes and aspirations of its people resonated profoundly in his songs. Over the course of his career, he composed more than 20,000 songs, many of which have attained timeless status. His enduring legacy is reflected in the BBC Bangla list of the 20 greatest Bangla songs, in which three of his compositions were featured—a testament to his global creative recognition.

Anwar’s contributions to cinema were equally remarkable. He directed his first film, Nantu Ghotok, in 1982, showcasing his versatility across storytelling, screenplay, dialogue, and music. His multifaceted talents established him as an unparalleled figure in Bangladeshi cultural history.

In recognition of his extraordinary service to the nation and its arts, he was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2002 and the Independence Award in 2021. Numerous other accolades, including the prestigious Bachsas Award, further honour his lifetime achievements.

Gazi Mazharul Anwar passed away on 4 September 2022, leaving behind a legacy of music and cinema that continues to inspire love, patriotism, and artistic excellence. His compositions remain an enduring source of inspiration, teaching the language of love and nurturing the spirit of freedom.
