Gazipur Police Commissioner Served Show-Cause Notice for Blocking Roads During Commute

Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner Md Nazmul Karim Khan has been served a show-cause notice after reports emerged that he regularly travelled between Dhaka’s Gulshan and Gazipur by blocking roads, causing severe traffic congestion and public suffering.

The issue came under government scrutiny after a leading national daily recently published a detailed report highlighting the public inconvenience created by the commissioner’s commuting practices.

On Monday (25 August), following a meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury addressed the matter while speaking to journalists:

  • The government is already taking action against the Gazipur Police Commissioner.
  • The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has been instructed to handle the matter.
  • A formal explanation has been sought from the commissioner, alongside a show-cause notice.
  • The public will see the outcome of this process within a few days.

According to the published report:

Time of Day Location Affected Action Taken by GMP Commissioner’s Escort Consequence
Morning (Gulshan → Gazipur) Tongi’s College Gate Flyover Converted into a one-way road for his passage Dhaka-bound traffic lane fully closed
Evening (Gazipur → Gulshan) Bhogra Flyover Again made one-way for his return Gazipur-bound traffic flow halted
  • The commissioner reportedly resides in Dhaka’s Gulshan and commutes daily to Gazipur for work.
  • This unilateral diversion of traffic flow led to daily gridlocks, severely affecting commuters.

Public Impact

  • Ordinary citizens were forced to endure long hours of traffic jams due to the commissioner’s special travel arrangements.
  • Media reports brought the matter to light, prompting swift government attention.

This development underscores the government’s renewed focus on ensuring accountability within the law enforcement agencies, particularly when public inconvenience arises from misuse of official privilege.
