In Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, young activists leading the Gen-Z movement staged a protest in the Baluwatar area on Sunday night, demanding the resignation of the country’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
The protest took place in front of the Prime Minister’s official residence, where demonstrators raised slogans opposing the decision to appoint three new ministers to the cabinet without consultation.
The protest was led by Sudan Gurung, a self-proclaimed leader of the Gen-Z movement, along with his supporters. They asserted that the expansion of the cabinet was carried out without consulting their movement, calling it a violation of democratic norms. The demonstrators demanded the immediate resignation of Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
During the demonstration, Gurung declared:
“If we take to the streets again, no one will be able to stop us. We will drag down those we put in power.”
He also accused lawyer Om Prakash Aryal of installing himself as the Minister of Home Affairs from within the system.
In a symbolic gesture, Gurung brought along relatives of those who were injured or killed during last week’s protests against the former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli’s government.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki recently appointed three key ministers:
| Minister | Portfolio | Background |
| Om Prakash Aryal | Home & Law | Prominent lawyer, known for filing a writ petition against the appointment of Lokman Singh Karki as head of the anti-corruption commission. Served as legal advisor to Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Participated in discussions with President Ram Chandra Paudel during Karki’s appointment process and attended her oath-taking ceremony. |
| Rameshwar Khanal | Finance | Former Finance Secretary. Chaired a high-level Economic Reform Commission under Oli’s government, submitting a 447-page report with analysis of weaknesses, causes of problems, immediate measures, and long-term solutions. |
| Kulman Ghising | Energy | Former Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). Widely popular for resolving the country’s chronic load-shedding crisis through effective management. Recently removed by the Oli government and replaced with Hitendra Dev Shakya. |
Additionally, Sabita Bhandari, a senior lawyer, has already been appointed as the Attorney General.
Multiple sources confirmed that Prime Minister Karki first contacted the three candidates by telephone. Later, after detailed discussions in her office, she finalised the appointments.
On Sunday morning, she initiated discussions regarding the formation of a crisis-period cabinet. According to the decision, a maximum of 11 members will form the cabinet, with ministers potentially holding responsibility for multiple portfolios.
Political Context
The unfolding situation demonstrates the fragile balance between youth-led street movements and Nepal’s interim administration, with cabinet decisions already sparking significant unrest.
