The international diplomatic community is reeling following a high-stakes US military operation in Caracas that resulted in the apprehension of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. In a heated emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday, global heavyweights Russia and China issued a blistering condemnation of the American intervention, labelling the act a flagrant violation of international law and a direct assault on national sovereignty.
The crisis began in the early hours of Saturday when US special forces launched a targeted raid in the Venezuelan capital. The US government justifies the action based on long-standing indictments involving narcotics trafficking and terrorism. Following their extraction, the Maduro couple was transported to New York, where they appeared before a federal court in Manhattan on Monday. Both pleaded “not guilty,” with Maduro maintains his status as the rightful head of state.
The UNSC meeting, convened at the request of Venezuela and facilitated by Colombia (a newly inducted council member as of 1 January), highlighted a deep schism between Western powers and the Russo-Sino bloc.
Russia: Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia argued that there is no legal framework that could possibly legitimise what he termed “American crimes” on foreign soil.
China: Deputy Representative Geng Shuang expressed “profound concern,” characterising the US intervention as “illegal bullying.”
The United Nations: Secretary-General António Guterres, via Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo, warned of the “dangerous precedent” this set for regional stability and territorial integrity.
| Party | Official Position | Key Argument |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Law Enforcement Action | Operation was a “lawful arrest” based on criminal indictments. |
| Venezuela | Armed Aggression | Alleged civilian infrastructure damage and loss of life. |
| Russia/China | Sovereign Breach | Violation of UN Charter principles regarding non-interference. |
| UN Secretariat | Neutral Concern | Called for respect for political independence and regional peace. |
Venezuelan Ambassador Samuel Moncada presented a harrowing account of the raid, alleging that US bombing had destroyed civilian infrastructure and resulted in significant casualties. He described the event as an “unlawful armed attack and kidnapping” with no basis in international treaties. Conversely, US Ambassador Mike Waltz maintained that the United States is “not at war” with the Venezuelan people, but rather executing a judicial mandate against a criminal element.
As the federal trial commences in Manhattan, the global community remains on edge, fearing that this unprecedented “extraction” of a sitting leader could redefine the boundaries of international diplomacy and military overreach.
