The Police Headquarters has withdrawn Dr Nazmul Karim Khan, Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP), following widespread criticism regarding his use of public roads.
On Monday, 1 September, Inspector General of Police (IGP Baharul Alam) signed a formal order instructing the Commissioner to hand over his responsibilities and report back to Police Headquarters no later than 2 September.
A recent report in a national daily revealed that during Dr Karim’s daily commute to and from his workplace, public roads were blocked off for ordinary citizens. The disclosure sparked significant criticism across various quarters.
As a result, a show-cause notice was issued against him. Confirming the matter, the Government’s Security Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, admitted that the allegations were under investigation.
According to multiple sources from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Police, the matter was raised at a core committee meeting of the Home Ministry held on Sunday, 31 August. The meeting reviewed an intelligence report on the prevailing situation in the Gazipur Metropolitan area. Based on the findings, the decision was taken to withdraw Dr Karim from his post.
Dr Nazmul Karim Khan is a career police officer belonging to the 15th batch of the Bangladesh Police Service. Over his career, he has held several notable positions and faced both setbacks and reinstatements.
