Golden-Coloured Statues Discovered in Chuadanga

Five golden-coloured metallic statues have been recovered from a brass urn in Palli Khorda village, Bhangbaria Union, Almadhanga Upazila. The recovery took place on Monday afternoon (2 January) during a joint operation conducted by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local police. Authorities have confirmed, however, that the statues are not made of gold.

Local sources reported that the discovery was made by Abul Mujam, son of Chini Uddin, while excavating land for his new house. During the digging, Mujam unearthed an old brass urn, which he later buried in his courtyard.

Based on a secret tip-off, a team from Chuadanga-6 BGB, in cooperation with Almadhanga Police, carried out a search at Mujam’s residence. Inside the urn, the officers found five metallic statues wrapped in red cloth. Due to their shiny golden appearance, villagers quickly speculated that a treasure of gold had been found.

Law enforcement authorities quickly cordoned off the area to maintain order. Initial examinations confirmed that the statues do not contain gold. Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Hasan, commanding officer of Chuadanga-6 BGB, stated that preliminary analysis shows the statues contain between 53% and 60% copper. The golden coating had caused confusion among local residents.

Experts suggest that the statues may have archaeological significance. Their preservation style, wrapping, and structural features will be studied to determine their historical importance. After the assessment, the statues will be formally handed over to the relevant government authorities for preservation.

A summary of the recovered statues is provided in the table below:

No. Statue Type Material Composition (%) Colour Wrapping
1 Goddess Copper 53% Golden Wrapped in red cloth
2 Goddess Copper 55% Golden Wrapped in red cloth
3 Goddess Copper 58% Golden Wrapped in red cloth
4 God Copper 60% Golden Wrapped in red cloth
5 God Copper 56% Golden Wrapped in red cloth

Following evaluation by local archaeologists, the statues will be handed over to the Chuadanga District Administration and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Authorities emphasised careful handling due to the potential historical and cultural importance of these artefacts.
