Google adds AI feature to Gmail

Google is taking a significant step towards enhancing its email platform, Gmail, by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the service. The new AI assistant, branded ‘Gemini’, is designed to simplify tasks such as searching emails, creating to-do lists, and drafting responses, promising a more streamlined and efficient user experience. However, alongside this innovation, concerns about privacy and data security have emerged.

The rollout of Gemini began in January this year and will be introduced gradually to users worldwide. Google’s primary goal is to ease the management of increasingly crowded inboxes and reduce the time spent composing emails. By leveraging generative AI technology, Gemini can understand natural language and interpret user requests in context.

For instance, a user could ask, “What was the name of the person I discussed job opportunities with last month?” Gemini will then scan the inbox to extract the relevant information, providing results that are more targeted and time-sensitive than conventional search.

In addition to search capabilities, Google is testing a new inbox management tool that could automatically identify actionable items within emails and generate to-do lists, eliminating the need for separate note-taking. This feature aims to make task management far more integrated and intuitive.

Email composition is also set to become smarter. Gemini will include an automatic proofreader, flagging spelling and grammatical errors, alongside a suggested replies function that can generate contextually appropriate responses. Users will have the option to send suggestions as-is or edit them according to their preference. While some features will be available for free, advanced functionalities will require a subscription. Google plans to clarify which features are free and which are paid in stages.

Experts suggest that these changes could transform email usage, allowing users to view concise inbox summaries, quickly prioritise important messages, and reduce the effort spent sorting irrelevant emails. Nevertheless, privacy concerns remain. To function effectively, Gemini requires access to the entire inbox, which could expose sensitive personal information. Google asserts that while the AI analyses email content, human employees do not read personal emails, and robust measures are in place to safeguard user data.

As Gmail embraces AI, users may experience a more efficient email workflow, but the balance between convenience and privacy will remain a focal point of discussion.
