Bangladesh government reinstates Ziaur Rahman’s Independence Day Award.
The Bangladesh government has reinstated the Swadhinata Padak for Ziaur Rahman.

The government has reversed its 2016 decision to cancel the Swadhinata Padak (Independence Day Award) posthumously given to former President Ziaur Rahman in 2003.

The decision comes as the Supreme Court did not mandate the revocation of the award, acknowledging Ziaur Rahman’s significant contributions to the 1971 Liberation War.

Alongside this reinstatement, the government has announced the Swadhinata Padak recipients, honoring individuals for their contributions across various fields.

Renowned physicist Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam has been recognized for his contributions to science and technology, while Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud is being awarded for his literary achievements. Novera Ahmed has been honored for her impact on culture, and Sir Fazle Hasan Abed for his exemplary social service. Azam Khan, a celebrated musician and freedom fighter, has been recognized for his contributions to both the Liberation War and the cultural sector.

Additionally, Abrar Fahad has been posthumously recognized for his role in the movement for democracy.

The only living recipient, Badruddin Mohammad Umar, has been awarded for his work in education and research. However, he has declined the honor, saying, “It is not possible for me to accept this award.”

The Swadhinata Padak is Bangladesh’s highest civilian award, given annually to individuals and institutions for outstanding contributions to the nation.
