Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has emphasised that the Jatiya Party’s decision to contest the forthcoming national election is solely a matter of their own political choice. He made the remarks on Friday, 5 December, while speaking to journalists after inaugurating an inter-college football tournament in Magura.
According to Shafiqul Alam, the government holds no restrictive position against the party. “The Jatiya Party has not been banned. If they wish to participate in the election, that is entirely up to them. Our position is clear,” he said. Despite this, he did not hold back from criticising the party’s historical political role.
He labelled the Jatiya Party as “a long-standing associate of autocratic rule”, asserting that their legacy would be judged by history. “The Jatiya Party has been a frightening accomplice to autocracy. Their involvement in past regimes is undeniable,” he stated. The Press Secretary argued that the party repeatedly supported the Awami League during moments of political turmoil, enabling actions that he described as “morally and politically unacceptable”.
He alleged that the Awami League often relied on the Jatiya Party to navigate difficult situations. “Whenever the Awami League needed support—whether for controversial decisions or political manoeuvres—the Jatiya Party stepped forward to assist. Even during episodes of extreme political violence, their support did not waver,” he said.
Discussing the upcoming national election, the Press Secretary reaffirmed the government’s determination to hold the polls within the constitutionally mandated timeframe. “The election will be held by 15 February. No power exists that can prevent it,” he asserted. He also expressed optimism that the election would be fair, peaceful and participatory. “The Election Commission has already concluded dialogue with all political parties. We want a peaceful environment and a credible election process,” he added.
On questions regarding BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, Shafiqul Alam said the government has not imposed any barrier to his return. “His return is his personal and political matter. There is no restriction from the government,” he clarified.
He dismissed renewed political debate about the so-called “Minus Four Formula”, calling it unfounded and politically motivated. “Those speaking about the Minus Four Formula are themselves products of autocratic politics. The government has never endorsed such an idea,” he said. He added that individuals who have been removed from politics faced consequences due to serious offences, including involvement in “murderous crimes”.
He reiterated that bringing back those responsible for the July killings remains a national priority. “It is our oath and commitment. The fascist regime responsible for the July massacre killed numerous students and civilians. The International Crimes Tribunal has confirmed evidence of this brutality,” he said.
Before addressing the press, Shafiqul Alam inaugurated an inter-college football tournament in Magura. The competition, organised by the National Sports Council with support from the district administration and district sports office, features nine teams and is being held at the Magura Government High School playground.
