Manchester City may have cruised to a convincing 3–0 victory over West Ham United, but the scoreline did little to soften Pep Guardiola’s famously exacting standards. In a move that underlined his relentless pursuit of excellence, the City manager cancelled the players’ planned extra Christmas break, making it clear that results alone are not enough if performances fall short of his expectations.
Speaking after the home win, Guardiola delivered a pointed and uncompromising message. While acknowledging the importance of the three points, the Spaniard stressed that the overall display lacked the intensity, control and sharpness required of a team with ambitions of lifting major trophies. For Guardiola, winning comfortably does not automatically equate to playing well — and that distinction shaped his decision.
Prior to the West Ham fixture, City’s coaching staff had agreed to grant the squad a three-day break. With the next Premier League match scheduled for 27 December against Nottingham Forest, there appeared to be sufficient time for rest and recovery. Under the original plan, players would enjoy time off from Monday to Wednesday, before returning to training on Christmas Day, 25 December, to begin preparations for the next challenge.
However, several players had requested Sunday off as well, hoping to extend their time with family and friends during the festive period. In the context of England’s notoriously congested winter calendar, such a request was understandable. Yet Guardiola was unmoved.
Following the West Ham match, he rejected the appeal, instructing the squad to report to the City Football Academy on Sunday. Only after fulfilling those duties were they permitted to begin their shortened break.
Explaining his decision, Guardiola said:
“The players asked for Sunday off, and I said no — because we did not play well enough. Those who didn’t feature will work on recovery and training. After the three days off, we will only have two days to prepare properly for the Nottingham Forest match.”
He went on to reflect on the broader challenges of managing in England:
“Everything depends on the schedule. Since coming to England, I’ve learned that if you can give players rest, you should. But the calendar here is very tight. Players need time with their families and moments to forget about football — that is also important.”
Guardiola concluded on a more conciliatory note, highlighting the balance between discipline and care:
“When you return to the pitch at the right time, your legs feel fresher. Recovery is essential. The players will spend time with their families and switch off mentally, and I will continue working for them as I always do.”
Once again, Guardiola’s decision serves as a reminder that at Manchester City, standards remain uncompromising — even during the festive season.
