Hamas Calls for Implementation of Second Ceasefire Phase: Statement

JERUSALEM, 2nd March 2025 – Palestinian militant group Hamas has insisted on the need for the immediate implementation of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, following Israel’s endorsement of a temporary extension to the initial phase.

In a statement to AFP, Hamas leader Mahmoud Mardawi asserted that “the only way to achieve stability in the region and the return of the prisoners is to complete the implementation of the agreement… starting with the implementation of the second phase.”

This demand comes amid ongoing tensions in the region and continued calls from both sides for a more lasting peace. The second phase of the ceasefire, which has yet to be fully implemented, is seen by many as a critical step towards long-term stability, though challenges remain in negotiating the finer details of such an agreement.

Hamas’s request highlights the delicate balance of power and negotiation that continues to shape the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While both parties have agreed to ceasefire terms at various points, past agreements have often been marred by violations and a lack of sustained commitment to the terms outlined.

Background:

The ceasefire discussions and subsequent phases of negotiation are part of the broader efforts to end the ongoing conflict, which has led to significant loss of life and destruction on both sides. In recent months, international mediators have worked to broker peace agreements, but challenges in securing lasting agreements have proven difficult. The role of Hamas in the conflict remains a contentious issue, with some countries and organisations designating the group as a terrorist organisation, while others view it as a legitimate political actor.
