Harry Styles has offered a candid glimpse into his journey from boy band member to solo superstar, reflecting on the challenges and growth he experienced following the breakup of One Direction.
In a conversation with his long-time friend and stylist, Harry Lambert, published in The Sunday Times Magazine on 14 February, the 32-year-old singer discussed the sudden shift from the camaraderie of a band to the solitude of a solo career.
“When you’re in a band with four other people, there’s so much room to hide,” Styles explained, referring to Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne. “There’s only ever so much weight on your shoulders. The first couple of times on stage without One Direction, I’d think, ‘What do I do with my hands?’”
He added, “But I also felt very alone all of a sudden. I was fortunate that people were interested in what I was going to make, yet I placed a huge amount of pressure on myself to make it right.”
Reflecting on his debut self-titled solo album in 2017, Styles said he was eager to explore his musical identity but feared disappointing those who had placed faith in him. “I wanted to see what music I could make alone, but I was acutely aware of the expectations of so many people,” he said.
Styles also discussed taking a significant break after completing his 22-month-long Love on Tour world tour in July 2023, marking his first major pause from music in over a decade. Initially, the idea of slowing down “felt insane.”
“I didn’t know if I could do it,” he admitted. “But it was the right time — we’d finished the tour, and I was turning 30. It was time to focus on other parts of my life.”
He spent time in Italy, a country that became profoundly important to him. “I learned how to slow down,” Styles said. “Sitting in a café, having a coffee, and appreciating the moment taught me joy in simplicity — something I hadn’t experienced before.”
The three-time Grammy winner described stepping away from music for more than two years as transformative. “Living my life in a way where I could like who I am outside this world has been powerful,” he said. “It has influenced the work I’m now making because it comes from a place of pure freedom.”
Styles is now back, announcing his fourth album, All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. (released 6 March), alongside a global residency spanning 50 shows across seven cities, including Amsterdam, London, São Paulo, Mexico City, New York, Melbourne, and Sydney from May to December 2026.
“The album title is like a life mantra,” he explained. “You can’t be at the disco all the time — it’s about moving through life with love, pausing to have fun, and embracing balance.”
