Headteacher Jailed for Child Rape

A government primary school headteacher in Brahmanpara Upazila, Comilla, has been arrested on charges of repeatedly raping a fifth-grade pupil over the past year. The accused, 52-year-old Monirul Islam, allegedly exploited his position of authority to commit acts of sexual violence while threatening the child to maintain secrecy.

The arrest was confirmed on Saturday, 20 December, by Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Thomas Barua of Brahmanpara Police Station. He told reporters that the allegations had been thoroughly investigated and that sufficient evidence had been gathered to warrant the detention of the accused.

According to police reports and the official complaint, Monirul Islam allegedly abused the student in his office at Purba Gopalnagar Government Primary School multiple times. The assaults reportedly involved inappropriate touching in sensitive areas and repeated sexual assault. The accused allegedly threatened the girl that if she revealed the abuse, she would face physical harm and academic failure, effectively forcing her into silence.

The assaults reportedly took place on at least three occasions in November: the 21st, 27th, and 29th. The pupil’s family noticed troubling changes in her behaviour and physical appearance, prompting them to question her carefully. Upon being questioned, the child disclosed that the headteacher had repeatedly raped her in the school library. Following this revelation, her mother immediately filed a formal complaint with Brahmanpara police, initiating the investigation that led to Monirul Islam’s arrest.

On the night of 18 December, Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan Jewel, accompanied by a police team, arrested the headteacher from his residence. He was later presented before a local court and remanded to jail. Officer Barua confirmed that the police are treating the case with the utmost seriousness and are providing full support to the victim and her family.

The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, sparking outrage among parents and education professionals. Many have questioned how such abuse could continue for an entire year without detection, highlighting urgent concerns about child protection in schools.

Child safety advocates have called for stricter measures to prevent abuse in educational institutions, including more rigorous background checks for teachers, monitoring of student–teacher interactions, and mandatory reporting procedures for suspected abuse.

Authorities have pledged to continue the investigation and ensure that justice is served. The incident serves as a chilling reminder of the vulnerabilities children face in educational settings and underscores the urgent need for safeguards to protect them from exploitation and abuse.
