Heatwave Expands Across Five Divisions

A spell of mild to moderate heatwave conditions is currently sweeping across Bangladesh, with meteorologists warning of a further intensification from Friday, 3 April. The most severe impact is being felt in the Rajshahi and Khulna divisions, where strong sunshine and elevated temperatures continue to dominate daily life. Meanwhile, rising heat levels are also expected in parts of Dhaka, Barishal, and Rangpur divisions.

According to the Bangladesh Weather Observation Team, the heatwave is likely to spread further from Friday, gradually covering additional districts in the affected regions. Isolated areas elsewhere in the country may also experience new pockets of heatwave activity.

Rising temperatures across districts

On Friday, a noticeable surge in daytime temperatures is forecast across several regions. In western and south-western districts, the mercury may climb significantly, reaching potentially uncomfortable levels of up to 39°C in some areas. Elsewhere, temperatures are expected to remain slightly lower but still well above seasonal averages, ranging between 36°C and 37°C.

Forecast temperature range by district group

Temperature Range Districts Affected
37°C – 39°C Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, Chuadanga, Meherpur, Kushtia, Jhenaidah, Jashore, Khulna, Satkhira, Pabna, Gopalganj, Narail
36°C – 37°C Natore, Naogaon, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Dhaka, Barishal, Patuakhali, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur

Health and safety concerns

Weather specialists have cautioned that the period between 12:00 noon and 3:00 pm is likely to be the most hazardous, as direct exposure to sunlight during these hours significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke. The public has been strongly advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during this window.

Citizens are encouraged to remain in shaded or well-ventilated environments wherever possible and to increase their intake of fluids, particularly water and other hydrating beverages, to reduce the risk of dehydration.

Outlook for the coming days

The current heatwave conditions are expected to persist until at least 6 April, according to available forecasts. However, meteorologists also note the possibility of scattered thundershowers in certain parts of the country during this period. While these brief spells of rainfall may provide temporary relief from the heat, they are unlikely to significantly reduce the overall intensity of the ongoing warm spell.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the combination of rising temperatures and intermittent weather activity creates highly variable conditions across different regions.
