Heavy Vehicle Ban on Highways During Eid

In preparation for the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has announced a temporary ban on certain heavy vehicles across the country’s highways. The directive will come into effect from Tuesday, 17 March, until Monday, 23 March, aiming to ensure smoother travel for millions of homebound passengers during the festive period.

Under this ban, the operation of trucks, covered vans, and lorries on national highways will be strictly prohibited. The restriction, issued through an emergency notification, is part of broader measures to minimise traffic congestion and enhance road safety during the peak holiday season.

However, vehicles carrying essential goods are exempted from the ban. These include:

Daily necessities such as food items

Perishable products

Ready-made garments

Medicines

Fertiliser

Fuel

Authorities have also instructed that no vehicles should be parked along the sides of major highways during this period to prevent further obstructions.

For uninterrupted traffic flow, commuters and transport operators are encouraged to contact the central control room of the Road Transport and Highways Division if necessary. Hotlines are available at 16107, 01550051606, and 01550056577.

Earlier, on 12 March, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police had issued a public notice, signed by the acting commissioner Md. Sarwar, confirming the ban on trucks, covered vans, and lorries between 17 and 23 March to facilitate smoother travel for people heading home for Eid.
