The Ameer of Hefazat-e-Islam, Allama Shah Muhibullah Babunagari, has issued a scathing dismissal of Jamaat-e-Islami’s political prospects, asserting that the party will fail to secure even a single seat in the upcoming national elections. Addressing the “Shane Risalat Grand Conference” in Nagarkanda, Faridpur, on Saturday night, the veteran cleric delivered a hardline critique of Jamaat’s theological foundations and their recent strategic maneuvers. The event, organised by the Islami Jubo Somaj, served as a platform for Babunagari to draw a sharp ideological line between his organisation’s vision of faith and the political Islam championed by Jamaat-e-Islami.
Babunagari was unapologetic in his theological condemnation, directly attacking the legacy of Sayyid Abul A’la Maududi, the founder of Jamaat-e-Islami. “Our Islam and the Islam of Maududi are not the same,” the Hefazat chief declared to a captivated audience of thousands. He went on to argue that “Jamaat’s Islam is not Islam at all; only the Islam of Medina represents the true faith.” This rhetorical distinction underscores a long-standing friction between the Deobandi-influenced Hefazat-e-Islam and the pan-Islamist, politically oriented framework of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Furthermore, the Hefazat Ameer turned his attention to the shifting alliances within the country’s religious political landscape. He expressed stern disapproval of the recent electoral understanding reached by a coalition of eight Islamic parties. According to Babunagari, these alliances are devoid of genuine religious principle and are driven solely by political expediency. “These eight parties have united merely for the sake of seats and votes,” he remarked, suggesting that such coalitions are opportunistic attempts to gain parliamentary footholds rather than sincere efforts to implement religious values.
| Speaker | Designation/Affiliation |
|---|---|
| Allama Shah Muhibullah Babunagari | Ameer, Hefazat-e-Islam (Chief Guest) |
| Allama Khalil Ahmed Quraishi | Mohtamim, Hathazari Madrasa |
| Mufti Kamruzzaman | Mohtamim, Shamsul Ulum Madrasa, Faridpur |
| Mufti Ismatullah Qasemi | Renowned Cleric, Nagarkanda |
| Maulana Nizamuddin | Mohtamim, Purura Madrasa |
The conference was attended by a cohort of influential Deobandi scholars, including the head of the prestigious Hathazari Madrasa, who echoed sentiments of religious preservation. As the election season intensifies, Babunagari’s prediction of a total electoral whitewash for Jamaat-e-Islami highlights the deepening divide within the Islamic vote bank. By dismissing Jamaat’s legitimacy both at the ballot box and in the mosque, the Hefazat leadership appears to be positioning itself as the sole guardian of “authentic” religious influence, independent of the parliamentary ambitions of their rivals.
