Holland Hat-Trick Sends Liverpool Tumbling

Manchester City delivered a commanding performance in the EFL Cup quarter-finals, thrashing Liverpool 4–0 at the Etihad Stadium to secure a place in the semi-finals. Norwegian striker Erling Haaland was the star of the show, scoring a brilliant hat-trick and further cementing his reputation as one of world football’s most lethal forwards. This marked City’s eighth consecutive progression to the semi-finals of England’s oldest domestic cup competition under Pep Guardiola.

Match Summary

Liverpool, trailing the Premier League leaders by 21 points, looked unsteady from the outset. In contrast, City came into the fixture on the back of an FA Cup triumph over Arsenal two weeks earlier, and their confidence was evident. The first breakthrough arrived in the 39th minute when Virgil van Dijk fouled Niko O’Riley in the box, awarding City a penalty. Haaland calmly converted, opening the scoring. Eight minutes later, he doubled the lead, before adding a third goal with a header in stoppage time of the first half.

The second half saw City maintain their dominance. Antonio Semenyo extended the lead to 3–0 in the 50th minute, and just seven minutes later Haaland completed his hat-trick following a precise assist from Ghanaian winger Semenyo. Across all competitions, this was Haaland’s 12th hat-trick for City in the season.

Liverpool’s sole chance to get on the scoresheet came in the 65th minute when Mohamed Salah stepped up to take a penalty. However, City’s goalkeeper James Trafford saved the effort, leaving Liverpool to exit the pitch empty-handed.

City vs Liverpool Head-to-Head This Season

Competition Matches Played City Wins Liverpool Wins Draws Goals (City–Liverpool)
EFL Cup QF 1 1 0 0 4–0
Premier League 2 2 0 0 5–1
FA Cup 1 0 0 1 0–0

Prior to this defeat, Liverpool had already lost both Premier League encounters against City this season. For a club that has won the FA Cup eight times, losing three consecutive matches to the same opponent in a single season is a rare occurrence, last happening in 2015–16 against West Ham United.

Haaland’s hat-trick and City’s clinical attacking display highlighted the gulf between the two sides on the day. Guardiola’s men now look set to continue their pursuit of silverware in the EFL Cup, while Liverpool must regroup and address defensive frailties as they fight to salvage the season.

With such a dominant performance, Manchester City have sent a clear message: they remain the team to beat in England, combining tactical mastery with individual brilliance.
