Jhenaidah, Bangladesh – In a tragic turn of events, police have recovered the lifeless body of a four-year-old girl from beneath a bed in a neighbour’s house. The shocking incident occurred at approximately 10:30 pm on Wednesday in Eidgapara, located in the Sadar Upazila of Jhenaidah district.
The deceased child, identified as Saima Akter, was the daughter of Saiful Islam, a local van driver. Following the grim discovery, police took Sontona Khatun, 32, the wife of neighbour Aktaruzzaman Masud, into custody for questioning.
Local residents reported that Saima had gone missing earlier in the day. From the morning, the community searched every corner of the area—nearby ponds, homes, and streets—but the child could not be located. Public announcements were made via loudspeakers in an attempt to locate her. Tragically, it was only later that night that police discovered her body inside the neighbour’s home.
According to the child’s father, Saiful Islam, “I had left for work in the morning, taking my daughter along briefly in my van. I left her playing outside, asking her mother to call her when lunch was ready. That was the last time I saw her.” He added that after realising she was missing, he searched nearby ponds and surrounding areas with the help of neighbours. “When she was still missing, I filed a report at the police station and made announcements in the area.”
Saiful explained that suspicion arose when he visited the upper floor of Masud’s house to check for Saima. “Masud’s wife claimed that my daughter had not come to their home. But later, I noticed her carrying a sack and acting suspiciously near the pond. When I shouted, she ran back inside. I alerted the police immediately.” The child’s body was subsequently recovered from under a bed in the neighbour’s house.
Additional Police Superintendent Mahfuz Hossain confirmed that authorities conducted an extensive search of local ponds and surrounding areas after being notified of the child’s disappearance. “Late at night, we received information that the body had been found in the neighbour’s residence. The circumstances leading to this incident are still unclear. The suspect is currently in police custody, and we are conducting a thorough investigation. Further details will be released after the post-mortem report is completed,” he said.
The community remains in shock as investigators continue to piece together the events that led to this tragic incident. The case has drawn widespread attention, highlighting urgent concerns about child safety in the region.
