In a dramatic turn of events ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, independent candidate Shahnewaz Shuvo, representing the horse symbol in Dinajpur-6, has formally withdrawn from the race, citing concerns over administrative neutrality and his personal safety.

Shuvo announced his decision at a written press conference held at Hakimpur Press Club on Tuesday, 27 January, at 12:30 pm. The press conference was attended by Hakimpur Press Club officials, including president Golam Mostafizar Rahman Milon and general secretary Murad Imam Kabir, along with several other members.

During the press briefing, Shuvo detailed a series of threats and obstacles he has faced while campaigning. He stated that on 23 January, during a scheduled family grave visit intended to mark the formal start of his campaign, local BNP leaders allegedly attempted to attack him. With the support of his supporters and local residents, he narrowly escaped harm. Despite reporting the incident to the authorities, Shuvo claims no action was taken, and the administration remained silent.

Further compounding his concerns, Shuvo revealed that after receiving his election symbol on 21 January, he requested the “13th Parliamentary Election Manual” from the returning officer, but was denied access to the document. Additionally, he reported that on 22 January, his inherited property in Birampur was being encroached upon. Notifications to the local police, SP, OC, and assistant commissioner reportedly yielded no response, leaving him vulnerable.

Shuvo also cited difficulties in obtaining a firearms licence, which he had requested for personal security. “Given that I cannot secure a licence, my property is being encroached upon at night, and the administration remains indifferent, I see no alternative but to withdraw,” he said. He further warned that should any harm come to him, the district administration and returning officer would bear full responsibility.

Summarising his grievances, Shuvo pointed to what he perceives as systemic failings that compromise the integrity of the electoral process in Dinajpur-6:

DateIncidentAuthorities’ Response
21 JanRequested Election Manual from Returning OfficerDenied
22 JanEncroachment of inherited property in BirampurNo action by SP, OC, AC
23 JanAlleged attack during family grave visitNo intervention by administration
Jan (ongoing)Application for firearms licenceNot approved
OverallMultiple administrative lapsesPerceived inaction, unsafe conditions

Shuvo concluded, “Considering the passive stance of the district administration and the returning officer, I cannot have confidence in the fairness of this election. For the safety of myself and my supporters, I am withdrawing my candidacy.”

The press conference highlighted the candidate’s insistence on accountability, while also raising broader questions about the transparency and safety of the electoral process in the constituency.
