Police in the coastal town of Kuakata, in Patuakhali district, have recovered the body of a young housewife from a rented residence, prompting widespread concern among local residents. The victim, identified as Arifa Akter, was found with severe injuries to her neck late on Monday night. Her body was sent for post-mortem examination to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital on Tuesday morning to determine the exact cause and time of death.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 pm on Monday at a rented house owned by Abdus Sattar, located in Ward No. 3 of Kuakata Municipality. According to police sources, Arifa’s husband, Rifat Howlader, has been taken into police custody for preliminary questioning after his statements were found to be inconsistent. Investigators have stated that his behaviour at the scene raised suspicions, necessitating further interrogation.
Arifa Akter was the daughter of Khalek Howlader of the Barogati area under Torki Port in Gournadi upazila, Barishal district. Her husband, Rifat, is the son of the late Anwar Hossain Howlader from the same locality. Local residents and police officials reported that the couple had moved to Kuakata around four months ago, leaving their ancestral home behind.
According to neighbours, the couple’s marriage was the result of a romantic relationship, and as a consequence, they reportedly had limited contact with their respective families. Rifat was employed at a local restaurant in Kuakata, while Arifa stayed at home. Residents of the area stated that domestic disputes between the couple were not uncommon and that arguments could sometimes be heard from their room.
On the night of the incident, neighbours were alerted by sudden cries coming from the house. When they approached the room, they found Arifa lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Rifat was reportedly sitting nearby, crying. The neighbours immediately informed the police, who arrived shortly afterwards and secured the scene.
The Officer-in-Charge of Mahipur Police Station, Mahabbat Khan, confirmed the recovery of the body and the detention of the husband. He stated that Rifat’s statements were incoherent and contradictory, which led police to place him in custody for further questioning. “The body has been sent for autopsy, and we are awaiting the medical report. Based on the findings and other evidence, appropriate legal action will be taken,” he said.
Police have also collected preliminary evidence from the scene and are questioning neighbours and acquaintances to reconstruct the events leading up to Arifa’s death. The case has intensified discussions locally about domestic violence, mental health, and the vulnerabilities faced by young couples living away from family support.
