Lionel Messi, one of the greatest players of all time, once faced José Mourinho, one of football’s most renowned coaches. Mourinho, who initially served on Barcelona’s coaching staff, later took charge of rival teams from the dugout, often coming up against Messi. Interestingly, Mourinho credits these encounters with improving his coaching skills, though debates about the “greatest of all time” still irritate the former Real Madrid coach.
Mourinho has coached against Messi not only during his tenure at Real Madrid but also at FC Porto, Chelsea, and Inter Milan. His clashes with Messi at Real, particularly in El Clásico matches, demanded intense tactical planning and quick decision-making.
When asked which player most contributed to his development as a coach, Mourinho, now 62 years old, said: “Messi, because every time I played against him, he forced me to think even harder.”
Mourinho first faced Messi in November 2023, while coaching FC Porto, and later frequently in high-stakes El Clásico matches while at Real Madrid.
Given the discussion about Messi, the conversation naturally turned to the all-time greatest player debate. Mourinho expressed his displeasure: “In my opinion, it is unfair, and whenever I hear someone discuss it, I do not like it. The younger generation may know the names, but they do not understand the depth of players like Pelé, Eusébio, or Beckenbauer. Football and the playing conditions back then cannot be compared to today.”
He further explained his frustration when comparisons are made between players of different generations: “Football in their time was not like today. Forty years ago, if it rained, the ball would weigh 10 kilograms. Now the ball glides smoothly.”
Messi has now moved to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States, representing Inter Miami. While he continues to shine, the intensity of past rivalries is naturally absent.
Meanwhile, Mourinho remains in Europe but is coaching a less prominent club, Fenerbahçe in Turkey. His aim is to lead Fenerbahçe into the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League. On Wednesday, Mourinho’s team will face Portuguese club Benfica in the first leg of the play-offs.
| Person | Current Club | Focus / Objective |
| Lionel Messi | Inter Miami (MLS) | Win MLS title for the first time |
| José Mourinho | Fenerbahçe (Turkey) | Qualify for 2025–26 UEFA Champions League |
Even though they are in different continents now, Messi’s past presence helped Mourinho sharpen his tactical abilities, showing how one of football’s greatest players contributed to the growth of one of its most strategic coaches.
