The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced that Humayun Kabir, Foreign Affairs Advisor to BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, will contest the upcoming national parliamentary elections from Sylhet. This was confirmed by the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The announcement came on Sunday, 5 October, during a meeting at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan with Gwyn Lewis, the UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka.
At the start of the meeting, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said: “From now on, Humayun Kabir will remain in the country and will contest the elections.”
In response, the UN Resident Coordinator acknowledged that he was aware of the matter and also knew which seat was being taken over and by whom.
Pointing towards Humayun Kabir, he added: “He is aware that the next Foreign Minister will come from Sylhet.”
