Comilla, 8 March 2026: Tragedy struck a family in the western Maizpara area of Daudkandi when a husband succumbed to injuries sustained during a devastating kitchen stove explosion that had earlier claimed his wife’s life.

Jelhak Ahmed, 37, passed away on Saturday afternoon at around 4:00 pm while receiving treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. The information was confirmed by his brother-in-law, Mokhlesur Rahman.

Jelhak Ahmed, originally from Palasun village in Sherpur, Bogura, served as a lecturer in the Management Department at Rehana Majid College in Homna, Comilla. His death comes just days after his wife, Umme Humaira, 30, died from burn injuries sustained in the same incident.

Umme Humaira had been admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery following the accident on 24 February. She passed away at 6:00 am on Saturday, and her body was buried at midnight that day in Babuniamondolpata village, Shahjahanpur Upazila, Bogura.

The couple’s one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Jannat Humaira, and Umme Humaira’s paternal aunt, Monowara Begum, remain under critical care at the Dhaka facility.

The explosion occurred at the residence of one Piar Ali in western Maizpara, Daudkandi, at approximately 6:00 am on 24 February. According to Umme Humaira’s elder brother, Khan Jahan Ali, she had started working as a tenant in a ground-floor unit of Piar Ali’s three-storey building on 22 January.

Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, Resident Surgeon at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, stated that four family members were admitted to the emergency department on the morning of 24 February with severe burn injuries. The extent of burns sustained by the victims was as follows:

Name Age Relation Percentage of Burns Current Status

Authorities continue to monitor the remaining victims closely, while the community of Daudkandi mourns the loss of two lives in this tragic accident. The incident has highlighted concerns over household safety measures and the risks associated with cooking in densely populated residential units.
