Husband Sentenced to Death for Wife’s Murder in Naogaon

A man has been sentenced to death by a Naogaon court for the murder of his wife in Niamatpur upazila in 2015.

The verdict was delivered on Monday by Judge Mohammad As-Sams Jaglul Hossain of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1, in the presence of the convicted man, Mostafizur Rahman. Public Prosecutor Advocate Iqbal Jamil Chowdhury confirmed the ruling.

Background of the Case

According to the prosecution, Mostafizur Rahman married Rani Begum, daughter of Anisur Rahman Sakidar of Srirampur village in Manda upazila, in 2007. At the time of their marriage, a dowry was provided, which included:

  • Cash: BDT 40,000
  • Van: 1 unit
  • Sewing Machine: 1 unit

Following the marriage, Mostafizur frequently subjected his wife to physical abuse over further dowry demands.

On 10 August 2015, after a family dispute, Mostafizur Rahman murdered Rani Begum. Her father, Anisur Rahman, filed a murder case with Niamatpur Police Station the following day.

Trial and Verdict

Over the course of the trial, 14 witnesses testified. After evaluating the witness statements and accompanying evidence, the tribunal found Mostafizur Rahman guilty and sentenced him to capital punishment.

The ruling is seen as a stern judicial stance against domestic violence and dowry-related crimes.
