In Comilla, a court has sentenced Mohammad Ziauddin Nasir to life imprisonment for strangling his seven-month pregnant wife, Ayesha Akter Rima, to death. The court also imposed a fine of 10,000 Taka, with an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
The judgment was delivered on Tuesday (18 November) by Judge Mohammad Saifur Rahman, District and Sessions Judge of Comilla, in the Public Safety Crime Prevention Tribunal.
The convicted defendant, Mohammad Ziauddin Nasir, was present in court when the verdict was pronounced.
Two other defendants, the victim’s brother-in-law Mohammad Mohiuddin Masum and sister-in-law Shahnaaz Begum, were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Public Prosecutor of the Tribunal, Advocate Yusuf Ali, confirmed this information.
According to court sources, on 1 September 2018, the victim, Ayesha Akter Rima (24), was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her husband Mohammad Ziauddin Nasir’s house in the Monohorpur area of Comilla. At the time, Rima was seven months pregnant.
Following the incident, the defense claimed that Rima committed suicide due to family disputes. However, the victim’s father, Mohammad Bahar Mia, filed a murder case with the Kotwali Model Police Station in Comilla, alleging that his daughter was deliberately strangled to death.
Based on the testimonies and evidence, the court found the charges against Mohammad Ziauddin Nasir to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Therefore, on Tuesday, the Comilla Public Safety Crime Prevention Tribunal’s Judge Mohammad Saifur Rahman pronounced the sentence.
Public Prosecutor Advocate Yusuf Ali stated, “The court has delivered its verdict based on testimony and evidence. We, as the prosecution, are satisfied with this judgment. Justice has been served.”
