In observance of the Sharadiya Durga Puja, Bangladesh’s largest land port, Benapole, will temporarily suspend import-export operations with India for six consecutive days. However, during this period, the port and customs will continue the clearance of goods, and passport-holding travellers between the two countries will be able to travel normally. Additionally, the export of hilsa fish will continue under special arrangements.
The information was confirmed by Emdadul Haque Lata, General Secretary of the Benapole C&F Agents Association. He stated that Indian C&F agents at the Petrapole border have issued a notice indicating that import-export activities will be halted from 28 September to 2 October for Durga Puja. Since 3 October coincides with Bangladesh’s weekly holiday, the total suspension of trade transactions amounts to six days.
Kartik Chakraborty, General Secretary of the Petrapole Clearing Agents Staff Welfare Association, further confirmed that import-export operations will resume from the morning of 4 October (Saturday). He also assured that special arrangements for the export of hilsa fish will remain in place.
Trade Volume and Significance
Benapole serves as a critical gateway for Bangladesh’s trade with India, handling the majority of imported goods. The temporary suspension will therefore affect commercial trade but will not hinder essential passenger movement or the specialised hilsa export process.
