In Bagerhat, the wife and child of an imprisoned Chhatra League leader were buried side by side

Bagerhat, 25 January 2026: The grieving community of Bagerhat witnessed a somber farewell on Saturday night as Kaniz Subarna, also known as Swarnali (22), and her nine-month-old son were laid to rest together at the family graveyard in Sabekdanga village. Their burial followed a late-night funeral prayer at the local Eidgah field.

The funeral proceedings began at 11:20 p.m., and by midnight, mother and child were interred side by side in Subarna’s father’s family grave. The tragedy came just a day after their lifeless bodies were discovered in the residence of Subarna’s husband, Juhel Hasan, alias Saddam, in Sabekdanga. Both were found dead under tragic circumstances on Friday afternoon.

Subarna was married to Juhel Hasan, the president of the banned Bagerhat Sadar unit of the student wing of a political party. Juhel is currently serving a sentence in Jessore Central Jail.

Following a post-mortem examination at Bagerhat District Hospital on Saturday, the bodies were brought to Subarna’s parental home. After ritual cleansing, they were transported around 4:15 p.m. in a hearse to Jessore Central Jail, where Juhel was granted a brief opportunity to view his wife and child one final time.

Correctional authorities permitted six family members to accompany the hearse into the prison premises on humanitarian grounds.

According to family sources, Subarna and Juhel had been married several years ago, and Juhel was already incarcerated before the birth of their child. Subarna’s brother, Md. Shuvo, told reporters that his sister had been emotionally distressed due to her husband’s imprisonment and that there may have been other contributing factors to the tragedy. He called for a formal investigation by the authorities, stating, “My brother-in-law never held his son. We took him to the prison so he could see the child one last time.”

The denial of parole for Juhel to attend the funeral has sparked criticism on social media. Bagerhat District Commissioner Golam Md. Baten clarified, “A parole application was in process. Since Juhel is in Jessore Jail, the request had to be made to the authorities there. We coordinated with the jail to ensure he could see his deceased family properly.”

Juhel had reportedly been in hiding since 5 August 2024 and was arrested in Gopalganj on 5 April last year. He remains in custody in connection with multiple ongoing cases.
