Among those whose presence illuminated the intellectual landscape of Bangladesh like a guiding light, Borhanuddin Khan Jahangir stands prominent. He was not merely a scholar; as a writer, poet, researcher, translator, and lyricist, his multifaceted talents greatly enriched the nation’s intellectual and cultural soil.
Born on 9 January 1936 into a well-educated family in Chandpur, his profound love for knowledge was evident from an early age. After completing a master’s degree in Political Science at Dhaka University, he pursued further studies in England, earning international recognition with a PhD from Durham University in 1974.
Throughout his career, he served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the National University and taught for many years as a Professor of Political Science at Dhaka University. His classrooms were not merely spaces for instruction but arenas of free thought and intellectual exploration.
His literary journey began while he was still in the eighth grade. Among the luminous poets of the 1950s—such as Shamsur Rahman, Hasan Hafizur Rahman, and Alauddin Al Azad—he emerged as the youngest yet most promising voice of his generation. His 1983 essay collection, Michael’s Awakening and Other Essays, attests to the depth of his thought and analytical acuity.
Borhanuddin Khan Jahangir’s body of work is both extensive and diverse. His short stories vividly portray social realities, while his novels explore the complexities of human life and the tensions of time. His poetry reflects a fusion of solitude, humanity, and profound emotion.
His contributions to translation are equally remarkable. He brought numerous important works of world literature into Bengali, opening new realms for Bengali readers. In addition, he edited significant texts on Baul songs, the Liberation War, society, and politics.
In recognition of his multifaceted contributions, he received the Bangla Academy Award, the Ekushey Padak, and numerous honours both at home and abroad.
On 23 March 2020, he passed away, leaving for the eternal realm. Yet his thoughts, writings, and wisdom continue to inspire and energise Bangladesh’s intellectual sphere.
We remember this polymath with the deepest respect and gratitude.
